Frequently Asked Questions

Can you sell me a snake in Colorado since you have a license?

Not unless you are licensed too! Hip Hogs can only buy and sell out of state or to another licensed entity in the state of Colorado.

How can I legally own a Hognose Snake in Colorado?

The laws in Colorado are: https://www.coloradosos.gov/CCR/GenerateRulePdf.do?ruleVersionId=10384&fileName=2%20CCR%20406-10

As an FYI here is the link to the broader regulations regarding all (including non native) reptiles in CO: https://cpw.state.co.us/Documents/RulesRegs/Regulations/Ch11.pdf

You are not allowed to own, gift, buy, sell or trade captive bred Heterodon nasicus (Western Plains Hognose) in the state of Colorado without a license.

If you want to obtain a license, it is a commitment (but worth it of course!).

The first step to becoming licensed is to commit to becoming a breeder.

We do not know of any other lay-method to legally own a captive bred hognose in Colorado…. (please message us if you know differing information!)

To become a breeder you need to:

- Register a business with Colorado Secretary of State.

- Get a Tax ID Number

- Find out your county/city regulations and obtain a city/county business license

- Contact Dept of Agriculture to discuss import/export veterinary needs

- Get breeders license with Colorado Fish and Wildlife
